Recommended Treatments – Clients FAQ’s

No. You would expect at temperatures of -162C thoughts turn to freeze. It will feel cold, although the sensation is not unpleasant.

Cryogenics has been around and been used for hundreds of years.
The use of low temperature in the healing process for pain management has been around for centuries in the form of ‘ice packs’ or ‘cold showers’.
Cryotherapy is the use of cold temperatures to stimulate a natural response from the body, so promoting quicker recovery from exercise, injury, and pain.

Unlike conventional cold treatments, the brain is ‘tricked’ into reacting to the cooled surrounding, by reducing blood flow to the extremities, increasing oxygen, endorphins, enzymes, nutrients and anti-inflammatory substances in the blood. Once the treatment stops blood rushes back, warming up the area but also bringing all the positive chemicals that help the body recover and repair much quicker and alleviate pain.

No. For many years ice has been the go-to treatment ; however, with ice baths, 20 minutes are spent immersed in a ‘wet’ environment at temperatures of 8-10C. This wet environment can cause muscles and tissue to ‘freeze’ and is extremely painful. The ice bath causes muscle stiffness after the procedure, which then takes some time to return to normal.

The freezing point for water is 0˚ Celsius (32˚ Fahrenheit). When the temperature falls below this water begins to change to ice.
Cryotherapy from a Penguin machine emits temperatures at -160˚ Celsius, and this is why this machine is the market leader as other devices do not go down to these temperatures.
Ice doesn’t compare as Cryotherapy is much colder with nitrogen. To put it into perspective: An ice bath for 45 minutes would correspond to 3 min of a Cryo treatment

Both. As Cryostimulation produces many beneficial responses within the body, it is ideal both pre and post-exercise. The benefits of treatment realised post-exercise are equally relevant pre-exercise. Increased levels of oxygen, anti-inflammatory substances and nutrients etc allow athletes to train harder and for longer.

Yes, the use of low temperatures in the healing process for pain management has been around for centuries in the form of ‘ice packs’ or ‘cold showers’. Localised Cryo Treatments are a far more accurate process of applying this age old methodology.

A localised or stimulation treatment plays an important role in the reduction of pain and swelling (inflammation) caused by injury or surgery and it promotes the healing process.

This is dependant upon the injury and its location.

Light stretching can be undertaken after treatment and it is deemed benefical. Thorntonhall Cryo has a dedicated area for you to carry out your Physio’s or Coach’s recommended light stretching routines. We do not offer any instruction with regard to light stretching or light stretching routines.

I rarely advise just a single treatment; however, with some localised treatments, this may be sufficient. For athletes, treatments are an on-going process and form part of their training and gameplay regime. Others may require an initial course followed by maintenance treatments. Every individual is different, and I will discuss that at your free no-obligation consultation.
